Planning Tile Joints Properly: Width, Material and Colour

The joint is not a leftover between the tiles but a load-bearing part of the covering. This article explains how width, grout material and colour relate to one another and what to bear in mind for care and regrouting.

Tiles are discussed at length, joints rarely — and that usually comes back to bite you only after installation. Yet the joint has a say in whether a covering absorbs stresses without damage, how easy the surface is to look after in everyday use and how the finished bathroom looks. This article works through the three planning questions in turn: how wide does the joint have to be, which grout material suits the loading, and which colour keeps the promise it makes in the sample room. At the end comes the part you forget when you move in and need after five years: care and regrouting.

Why the Joint Is Technically Necessary

Ceramic tiles are fired products and therefore have dimensional tolerances. The permissible deviations are governed by standards, and even with sorted material a spread remains within the batch. The joint absorbs this spread: it makes it possible to lay a straight line even though the individual tiles are not identical to a tenth of a millimetre. If the joint is too narrow, every dimensional deviation transfers immediately into the joint pattern, and the line starts to wander. That is precisely why completely jointless installation is rejected within the trade — it is not a particularly precise way of working but a workmanship error.

The second reason is movement. The substrate and the covering are in motion: screed continues to shrink, underfloor heating creates temperature changes, building elements deform under load, and outdoors temperature differences and moisture are added. A rigidly continuous covering without joints would have no way of releasing these stresses; they would discharge themselves in cracks, voids or chipped tile edges. The laying joint takes part of this and at the same time protects the sensitive tile edges from pressing directly against one another.

It is important to distinguish between three types of joint that are often lumped together. The laying joint between the tiles is filled rigidly with grout. Movement or field-dividing joints subdivide large surfaces and are executed in a flexible material; joints already formed in the screed have to be carried through into the covering in the same position, otherwise the covering cracks somewhere else. Perimeter and connection joints separate the covering from abutting building elements, door frames, baths and shower trays and are likewise closed with a flexible material. As orientation, the technical literature advises not to let fields indoors become arbitrarily large — figures of around 40 square metres are regularly named as an upper limit, and rather less with underfloor heating and in narrow, long floor plans.

This distinction also has legal consequences: according to the guidance documents of the Industrieverband Dichtstoffe, the German sealants industry association, flexible silicone joints count as maintenance joints that have to be checked regularly and renewed when necessary. Their renewal is therefore a maintenance service and not a defect in the original work — this belongs in the conversation before work begins, not three years afterwards.

Joint Width by Format and Substrate

As a rough grading: the larger the format and the heavier the loading, the wider the joint. With small-format material and mosaic, narrow joints of around two millimetres are customary; in the standard range, three millimetres is named as a sensible minimum; for large-format tiles and panels, the technical information of the tiling industry names three millimetres as the technically necessary minimum joint width, which should not be undercut. Outdoors, with terrace slabs and where temperature loading fluctuates strongly, the usual widths are above that. These values are orientation, not a standard in the sense of a fixed requirement — if in doubt, what counts are the tile manufacturer's installation instructions for the specific product.

Rectified material is often advertised with very narrow joints, and in practice large-format rectified tiles are frequently grouted with two millimetres. Rectified means that the edges have been ground to an exact dimension after firing; the dimensional spread is thus considerably smaller than with merely calibrated material. That, however, only solves the tolerance problem, not the movement problem — and it contradicts the technical recommendations mentioned for large formats. Anyone wanting to grout narrowly should therefore record this in writing with the client beforehand, consult the manufacturer's installation recommendation and not make the decision in passing on site.

The substrate shifts the recommendation further. A bonded screed behaves more calmly than a floating screed, and heated build-ups move more than unheated ones. With underfloor heating, in new buildings with building elements still shrinking and with large continuous surfaces, the wider variant is the safer one. The laying pattern is equally relevant: if long formats are laid in a bond, the rule of thumb is an offset of no more than one third of the tile length, because large-format tiles can be slightly bowed for production reasons and a half offset would otherwise lead to noticeable lippage.

In practical terms this means: the joint width belongs in the quotation and not in improvisation on site. If it is not defined, the yardstick is missing later for the question of whether the joint pattern corresponds to what was agreed. A small sample area with the actual material, the planned width and the intended grout is helpful. Cement Grout and Epoxy Grout Compared

Grouts are divided into two groups according to DIN EN 13888: cement-based grouts carry the abbreviation CG, reaction resin grouts — in practice mostly epoxy-based — the abbreviation RG. Among the cement-based products, the standard additionally distinguishes between normal grouts of class CG1 and improved grouts of class CG2, with additional letters naming the improved properties: reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance. For bathrooms, showers and living areas with normal loading, a cement-based grout of the higher class is generally the right choice — it is easy to work with, easy to make good and available in a large colour palette.

Epoxy grouts play to their strengths where chemical or mechanical loading goes beyond what is usual in a home: in commercial kitchens, in food processing businesses, in wet areas with intensive cleaning, on work surfaces and in swimming pool areas. They absorb practically no water, are resistant to many acids and cleaning agents and can be cleaned hygienically because the surface remains closed. A reaction resin grout can also make sense in a private bathroom, for instance in a level-access shower or behind the kitchen units — but it is not obligatory and, in standard situations, no substitute for careful workmanship.

The disadvantages of epoxy grout all lie in the processing. The material cures chemically, the pot life after mixing is short, and it has to be worked in swiftly in small portions. Residues have to be washed off the tile surface immediately and thoroughly; if a resin film is left behind, the surface darkens and, once cured, can only be removed with considerable effort. With natural stone and with absorbent or unglazed surfaces there is an additional risk of discolouration, which is why a trial area beforehand is obligatory there. An epoxy grout is therefore not a question of budget but of routine in execution — it belongs in practised hands.

One misunderstanding should be cleared up expressly: neither a cement grout nor an epoxy grout is a waterproofing layer. Areas exposed to water need a bonded waterproofing beneath the covering, which is planned and executed separately. The joint does not let surface water through unimpeded, but it is not the component that protects the construction from moisture — no grout quality compensates for missing waterproofing.

For the flexible joints, a separate material path applies: here sanitary silicone is used, usually with a fungicidal formulation for wet areas and colour-matched to the grout. What matters is the clean constructional build-up — the joint may only adhere to two flanks, which is why a backing profile is inserted in deep joints. Grout Colour: Contrast or Invisibility

The colour decision affects how a room is perceived more strongly than most clients expect. A joint in the tone of the tile makes the surface run together; the format recedes, the room looks calmer and larger, and small irregularities in the joint pattern are less noticeable. A contrasting joint, by contrast, makes the grid visible and emphasises the structure of the installation — the classic case is the white metro tile with a dark joint, where the pattern is precisely the design intention. Both are legitimate, but the high-contrast variant demands considerably more precise workmanship, because every deviation in the run of the joint immediately catches the eye.

In everyday use, the practical question is more important than the design one: which colour stays presentable? Very light joints show dirt on floor surfaces, above all in entrance areas, kitchens and hallways. Very dark joints show limescale rims and soap residues in the bathroom that are barely noticeable on light joints. Medium grey and beige tones are therefore the most robust compromise in heavily used areas. Anyone wanting a light joint on the floor should choose a cement-based grout of the higher class with reduced water absorption — that does not prevent soiling but does slow it down noticeably.

With cement-based joints, a note on colour consistency belongs in every consultation: the colour tone can vary slightly within a surface. The causes are differing absorbency of the substrate and of the tile edges, varying amounts of water added when mixing, different drying conditions and washing off too early or too wet, which releases binder from the joint surface. An absolutely uniform colour cannot be guaranteed with cement-based products. Reaction resin joints are more stable here, because they do not set by releasing water. And in every case: the colour tone of the cured, dry joint is lighter than that of the freshly applied one — the assessment belongs at the dry sample area.

One final point on coordination: flexible perimeter and movement joints should match the grout in colour, but they are a different material with their own colour rendering. Even with the same colour name, silicone deviates slightly in appearance — that is normal and not a workmanship error, but it should be shown to the client beforehand and not explained afterwards. Care and Regrouting

Cement-based joints tolerate daily cleaning well but react sensitively to the wrong products. Permanently acidic cleaners attack the cement matrix and wash out the joint surface over time; strongly alkaline products can cause colour changes. For regular cleaning, neutral cleaners are the right choice, while limescale removers should be used selectively, with short contact times and thorough rinsing afterwards. Steam cleaners are usually unproblematic with intact coverings, but are not to be recommended on joints that are already damaged or on silicone connections. Reaction resin joints are more chemically resilient but react sensitively to abrasive cleaning.

The most effective care in the bathroom is in any case not chemical but everyday: squeegee after showering and air the room. Standing moisture is the prerequisite for limescale deposits and for mould at the silicone connections. Where dark rims keep appearing at the bath or shower connection despite regular cleaning, this is frequently not a cleaning problem but a moisture problem — then it is worth looking at ventilation and construction before the joint is renewed once again.

Damaged cement-based joints can be repaired in sections. The loose or washed-out grout is scraped or milled out to a sufficient depth, the flanks are cleaned and freed of dust, and then it is regrouted with the same product and the same colour. Two limitations are worth knowing: a joint renewed in one spot will as a rule stand out visibly in colour from the aged remaining surface, and extensively cracked grout is usually a symptom — of a missing movement joint or a void beneath the tile, for instance — that regrouting will not remedy.

Silicone joints are not repaired but renewed. The old material is completely removed, the flanks are cleaned, degreased and dried, a backing profile is inserted in deep joints, and only then is the joint resealed. What is decisive is that the silicone adheres only to the two flanks and not to the base of the joint — otherwise it tears at the first movement. As a practical guide for renewal, the technical guidance documents name periods of a few years, depending on loading and care; more binding than any interval is regular visual inspection for cracks, detachment and discolouration.
