

Which Tile Size Suits Which Bathroom?
Format, grout pattern and laying direction determine the look, the effort involved and the amount of waste in a bathroom. This article sorts the common formats and shows where large formats make sense — and where they do not.
The question of the right tile size comes up in almost every bathroom project — usually far too late, namely once the floor plan and the sanitary fixtures have long been settled. Yet the format has a say in how calm a room feels, how demanding the installation becomes, what requirements the substrate has to meet and how much material ends up unused in the skip. This article sorts the common formats objectively, names the technical limits and addresses the points that regularly cause trouble in practice: small bathrooms, level-access showers, niches and pre-wall installations.
Why Tile Size Affects More Than the Look
The format works on three levels at once: on the appearance, on the installation effort and on the demands placed on the substrate. Appearance is the level that is easiest to change — the other two are not. Anyone who opts for a large format is implicitly also opting for a more carefully prepared substrate, for a particular installation method and for a particular way of working on site. That is why the question of format belongs at the beginning of the planning, not at the end.
The most important technical relationship is this: the larger the tile, the flatter the substrate has to be. A ceramic slab is rigid and does not follow any wave in the screed. If it rests on a high spot, a void forms underneath it — and voids are the most common cause of chipped corners and broken edges, because the tile is loaded at a single point instead of being supported across its full area. For large-format coverings, practice draws on the increased flatness requirement set out in DIN 18202 (Table 3, Row 4), the German standard for dimensional tolerances in building construction. In many older buildings in the Kreis Mettmann area this means one thing in concrete terms: additional levelling or smoothing before the first tile is set. This item frequently does not appear in quotations when the format is only decided later.
The installation method changes with the format as well. Large formats are set using what is known as the buttering-floating method: the adhesive is applied both to the substrate and to the back of the tile, so that the adhesive bed is genuinely closed across the full area. Added to this are adhesives with a longer open time, levelling systems to prevent lippage, suction lifters and, as a rule, two people to set the tiles. That is not an argument against large formats, simply information that belongs in the time and cost planning and that should be clarified in advance with the contractor carrying out the work.
Small Bathrooms: Why “Bigger Looks Bigger” Is Not Always True
The widespread rule says: fewer grout lines produce a calm surface, and a calm surface makes the room look bigger. In principle that is correct — but the rule comes with a condition that is rarely mentioned: the surface also has to remain largely undisturbed. And that is almost never the case in a small bathroom.
In a bathroom of five to eight square metres, the covering meets the door, the shower enclosure, the WC pre-wall, the vanity unit, the inspection hatch, the radiator and often a floor drain as well. Every one of these points means a cut. If all that is left of a 120 × 120 cm slab at the edge is a strip of 20 or 25 centimetres, the result is exactly the restless impression the large format was meant to avoid — only with a considerably higher use of material. What matters for the effect is not the tile size but the ratio of full to cut tiles in the visible surface.
A practical rule of thumb has proven its worth: choose the format so that the edge strips are no narrower than roughly half a tile width. In many small and medium-sized bathrooms this leads to a medium format. Tiles in the 60 × 60 cm format are often the better compromise here: calm enough for a coherent surface, small enough to fit into a real floor plan without extreme cutting losses. Anyone asking what size tiles should be used in a bathroom cannot avoid this calculation — it matters more than any statement about trends.
- Have a scaled setting-out plan drawn before deciding on the format — it shows immediately where unsightly leftover strips will occur.
- Lay elongated formats along the length of the room: this stretches the room visually without requiring a larger format.
- Floor and wall do not have to share the same format. Combining a large floor format with a smaller wall format is entirely legitimate in design terms.
- Light, matt surfaces and a grout colour close to the tile colour often calm the surface more effectively than a larger format.
- Set the starting point of the installation deliberately: full tiles belong where the eye falls first, cuts at the concealed edges.
- Think of the covering beyond the door threshold: if the same surface continues into the hallway, the room feels more generous than any larger format could make it.
- Choose wall-hung sanitary fixtures rather than floor-standing ones where possible — they keep the floor area coherent and noticeably reduce the number of cuts.
Large Formats and Small Formats Compared
Both directions have clear strengths, and neither is fundamentally the better choice. Large formats from around 60 × 60 cm up to 120 × 120 cm clearly reduce the proportion of grout. That produces a calm, coherent surface, less grout to clean and a stone-like, generous appearance — particularly in open bathrooms, living bathrooms and larger shower areas with linear drainage. The price for this is higher demands on the substrate and on workmanship, more effort in cutting and a higher share of waste in small-scale floor plans.
Small formats such as 30 × 30 cm and below work in the other direction. They forgive minor unevenness in the substrate, can be laid by one person, are less complicated when it comes to repairs and reordering, and cope far better with angular floor plans. The higher proportion of grout is not only a disadvantage: grout lines absorb stresses and give the surface more grip underfoot. In return, the cleaning effort is higher and the surface looks busier.
For practical purposes this can be sorted roughly as follows: large formats play to their strengths on large, undisturbed surfaces. Small formats play to theirs wherever a lot of cutting, adjusting or falls have to be formed. Wall and floor may be treated differently — different loads and different technical requirements apply to the wall than to the floor, and the ranges for wall tiles and floor tiles differ accordingly.
One aspect is regularly overlooked in the format discussion: the laying pattern. The same format looks different in a classic stack bond than in a half offset or a third offset, and the choice also has technical consequences. With elongated large formats, an offset of half the tile length is generally not recommended, because the slight bow that can occur in long slabs for production reasons then shows up as noticeable lippage in the middle of the neighbouring tile. A smaller offset is customary instead. Anyone opting for an elongated format should therefore agree the bond with the tiling contractor beforehand and, if in doubt, have a small trial area laid — that costs half an hour and prevents a result that cannot be corrected afterwards.
- Large formats: calm appearance, fewer grout lines, less cleaning effort — but a flat substrate, buttering-floating, two people, more waste where there are many corners.
- Medium formats: the usual compromise for bathrooms in existing buildings, easy to handle and flexible when cutting.
- Small formats and mosaic: indispensable where falls, curves and tight junctions are involved, at the cost of a higher proportion of grout.
- Wall loads and floor loads differ: a wall tile is not automatically approved for the floor — the manufacturer's specification decides.
Special Cases: Niches, Curves, Shower
The level-access shower is the point at which the question of format is decided technically — not aesthetically. With a central point drain, the fall has to be formed from four directions towards the drain. A rigid large slab cannot reproduce this double inclination; here you work with small-scale material, usually mosaic or small formats, whose grout lines absorb the changes of direction. If a linear or wall channel is installed instead, a single-sided fall in only one direction results — and then larger formats are perfectly possible in the shower area too. Anyone who wants large slabs in the shower area is therefore effectively deciding on the type of drainage.
A second point in the shower is slip resistance. For wet areas walked on barefoot, evaluation group A, B or C applies; for shower standing areas, at least group B is usually recommended. The better-known R classes from R9 to R13, by contrast, refer to surfaces walked on with footwear and are only of limited relevance for the private bathroom. The corresponding test methods were formerly set out in DIN 51097 and DIN 51130; both German standards were withdrawn in December 2021 and absorbed into DIN EN 16165. The short designations have remained, which is why they still appear in catalogues in this form. Both figures are given in the technical data of the respective series — it is worth checking them before ordering, because the same look is often available in several surface finishes.
Niches can almost always be planned without cuts if you start early enough. The trick is to define the clear internal dimension of the niche as a multiple of tile width plus joint width before the pre-wall is built or boarded. Then a full tile sits in the back wall of the niche, and the niche looks as if it were made in one piece. If, on the other hand, the niche is only measured after the material has been chosen, narrow cut pieces almost inevitably arise at the most visible point in the bathroom. The same principle applies in smaller form to curved pre-walls, columns and cladding: only small formats or mosaic follow a curve, large slabs do not.
Factoring In Grout Proportion and Waste
The proportion of grout is not purely a question of style. Grout lines absorb dimensional tolerances in the tiles and movements in the substrate, they provide additional grip underfoot, and they determine how much cleaning will be needed later. For large-format tiles, a joint width of at least 3 millimetres is usually assumed, so that dimensional deviations and stresses can be absorbed at all. Installation with virtually no joint is neither customary nor technically sensible in a bathroom. In addition, every surface needs movement joints at abutting components, in room corners and at junctions with other coverings — these joints are executed in a flexible material and are wearing parts that will have to be renewed at some point.
A second term that regularly causes misunderstandings when choosing a format is rectification. Rectified tiles are trimmed at the edges after firing and therefore have very precise dimensions; calibrated goods are merely sorted into size groups. Narrow joint patterns can only be executed cleanly with rectified material — but even there a minimum joint width remains necessary. Anyone planning a narrow joint should therefore look specifically for this property in the product data rather than take it for granted.
When it comes to waste, rules of thumb from practice help: for straight installation in a simply shaped room, an allowance of around five to ten per cent is usually assumed, and for diagonal installation or heavily angled floor plans rather ten to twenty per cent. The allowance rises with the tile size and with the number of corners, because larger offcuts can less often be used elsewhere. Regardless of this, a reserve beyond the pure requirement always belongs in the order: ceramics are produced in colour batches, and a later reorder from a different batch can differ visibly. One box of reserve for later repairs is the cheapest insurance in the whole project.
Short Checklist: Which Tile Size for the Bathroom
The following order has proven its worth in consultations. It leads to a sound decision more quickly than working from sample images — and it prevents a format being chosen that the substrate or the drainage does not permit in the first place.
- Clarify the floor plan and sight lines: where is the largest undisturbed surface, and from where is it seen?
- Define the shower drainage: a point drain means small-scale material, linear drainage allows larger formats.
- Check the substrate: is the required flatness present, or does additional levelling have to be planned in?
- Calculate the edge strips: does at least about half a tile width remain everywhere?
- Check the technical data: approval for floor or wall, slip resistance for the barefoot area, rectified or calibrated.
- Define the joint width and grout colour — both change the effect more than a jump in format.
- Order the quantity including a waste allowance and a reserve box from the same batch.
