

Hansgrohe or Grohe: Where the Two Tap Ranges Really Differ
Two similar names, two independent companies: this article sorts out the origins, series logic, cartridge and shower technology of both manufacturers. And it shows which criterion carries the most weight in the long run with concealed installations.
Hansgrohe and Grohe appear side by side on the list in almost every bathroom project. The names are similar, both manufacturers have their roots in Germany, both cover washbasin, shower, bath and kitchen — and yet they are two mutually independent companies with their own history, their own series logic and their own technology behind the chrome-plated surface. This article sorts the differences in a way that helps with the selection: what they genuinely have in common, where the systems diverge and how to determine which brand suits a specific project. Prices are deliberately left out, because they depend on the series, the version and the scope of the project and cannot sensibly be compared in general terms.
Common Ground: Origins and Quality Standards
The similarity of the names has a family reason, not a corporate one. Hans Grohe founded the business from which today's Hansgrohe SE emerged in 1901 in Schiltach in the Black Forest; the focus lay early on showers and shower products. From 1936, his son Friedrich Grohe built up a company of his own in Hemer in Westphalia, which initially concentrated more strongly on taps. Since then the paths have run separately — the two firms are competitors today and do not belong together, even if it is regularly assumed otherwise in sales conversations.
The ownership structure also differs between the two. Hansgrohe still has its headquarters in Schiltach; the majority of the shares are held by the US group Masco, and part has remained in family ownership. Grohe has belonged to the Japanese Lixil group since 2014, has its registered office in Hemer and its administration in Düsseldorf, with German production sites in Hemer, Lahr and Porta Westfalica among others. For product selection this matters less than for context: both brands are embedded in large international structures and no longer operate as purely family-run businesses.
Technically, both companies operate within the same framework, and that framework is tighter than differences in marketing suggest. Sanitary taps for the German market have to meet normative requirements — for instance on noise behaviour, pressure resistance and, with thermostats, on control behaviour — and all materials in contact with drinking water have to comply with the assessment criteria of the Umweltbundesamt, the German Environment Agency. Solid brass bodies, ceramic cartridges as the mixing unit, electroplated or PVD-coated surfaces and documented spare parts lists with exploded drawings are therefore found with both manufacturers. Anyone wanting to base a decision on the question “which brand is better” will find no sound answer at this level.
It makes more sense to compare one level down, namely between specific series. Both manufacturers offer a broad programme from the simple single-lever mixer to the elaborately styled design line, and the differences between an entry-level and a top-end series within one brand are generally greater than the differences between the brands at the same series level. A comparison is therefore only worthwhile once it is clear what level of quality, which surface and which type of operation are required. Design Language and Series Logic Compared
The most striking difference lies in how the range is structured. Hansgrohe works with two brands under one roof: hansgrohe covers the broad programme, while Axor is the design brand with its own distinct styling, whose collections are created in collaboration with external design studios. Anyone looking for a pronounced design signature will find it there in clearly delimited collections. Grohe does not run such a second brand in the same sense but grades its own programme across series from the functional entry level to design-led lines. That is not a judgement but a different way of organising things — it does change how you sensibly search, however: with Hansgrohe first via the brand, with Grohe directly via the series.
More important for planning than the look of an individual tap is the completeness of a series. What matters is whether the chosen washbasin tap is also available with a matching bidet tap, bath filler, concealed shower solution and, where applicable, kitchen tap in the same design language and the same finish. Both manufacturers offer such complete series, but not every series is available in every version and every finish. This check belongs at the start of the selection, not at the end — finding a matching addition afterwards is the most common reason for stylistic breaks in a finished bathroom.
A second practical point is the match between tap and basin. The spout height and projection have to suit the washbasin: a countertop basin requires a considerably taller tap than a built-in or vanity basin, and too short a projection means the stream hits the rim of the basin instead of the basin itself. Hansgrohe classifies this relationship systematically via comfort zones; with Grohe the dimensions are found in the product data sheets. In both cases the rule is: the dimensions of the planned basin should be settled before the tap is selected. Both manufacturers have broadened their finishes considerably in recent years. Alongside chrome-plated versions, matt black, brushed and warm-toned metal surfaces are available, many of them coated using the PVD process, which is regarded as more abrasion-resistant than classic electroplated finishes. Two notes from practice: colour tones with the same name are not identical between the brands, which is why taps from different manufacturers rarely go cleanly together in the same room. And special finishes are not available for every series and every component at either supplier — concealed finishing sets and accessories such as shower holders are the bottleneck here in particular.
Cartridge and Shower Technology
Inside every single-lever mixer a cartridge works with two ceramic discs running on one another, which control the quantity and the mixing ratio. Both manufacturers rely on this but differ in size, sealing concept and designation — Grohe markets its cartridge concept under the name SilkMove, while Hansgrohe uses its own cartridge types depending on the series. In practice this means: cartridges are not interchangeable between the brands, and even within one brand there are several designs. For a repair you therefore need the exact article number of the tap, not just the brand name.
With thermostats the technology lies in the thermostatic element, which readjusts the mixed temperature when the pressure fluctuates. Both manufacturers supply thermostats with a safety stop at 38 degrees and with bodies that do not heat up to hot water temperature on the outside. The noticeable difference in everyday use lies less in the brand than in the type: a thermostat reacts far more stably to pressure fluctuations than a single-lever mixer, which can be decisive in multi-occupancy buildings and where water is drawn off simultaneously. Water hardness should also be borne in mind — limescaled control units are the most common cause of declining temperature stability with both brands.
With showers, the main differences lie in the spray patterns and the way the water is distributed in the head. With many hand showers Hansgrohe mixes air into the stream, producing a softer, fuller spray pattern; Grohe works with its own water distribution in the shower head and, in several series, with clearly delimited spray types. Which variant is more pleasant cannot be decided by calculation — that is a case for the showroom. What both companies share is the idea of wipeable silicone nubs from which limescale can be rubbed off with a finger, and the option of reducing the flow rate with inserted limiters.
Three technical constraints should be clarified before the selection, because they rule out more products than any difference in taste: the available flow pressure, the way hot water is generated and the intended mounting method. Rain showers with a large surface need a certain volume of water to produce a closed spray pattern at all; instantaneous water heaters with limited output set a limit on the quantity of mixed water; and low-pressure connections require their own taps. Where a concealed solution is not structurally possible, pre-assembled shower columns and shower systems are an alternative that manages without intervening in the wall.
Spare Parts Availability as a Selection Criterion
With exposed taps the choice of brand has comparatively few consequences: if the product can no longer be repaired after many years, it is replaced without anyone having to touch the tiles. With concealed solutions it is different. The body is built into the wall, plastered over and tiled — and it stays there for the life of the bathroom. All that can be replaced later is the functional unit including the cartridge and the visible trim. These parts only fit the respective body from the same manufacturer. The brand decision on a concealed tap is therefore effectively a decision for decades, while on an exposed tap it remains a matter of taste.
Both manufacturers have responded to this with a system body of their own that stays the same across many series: Hansgrohe with the iBox, Grohe with the Rapido family. The advantage for clients and contractors is considerable, because it decouples the first-fix installation from the later design decision — the body can be set before the visible version is finally settled, and a later change of look is possible without opening the wall. Anyone working in an existing building should therefore establish which body is installed before the planning. If a body from one manufacturer is already in the wall, the brand question for that position is generally already answered.
Both companies state publicly that they keep spare parts available beyond the end of production of a series, and both operate a spare parts search with exploded drawings in which components can be found via the product's article number. The precise periods and conditions are set by each manufacturer itself and are occasionally changed; they should therefore be checked on the manufacturers' pages at the time of the decision and not taken second-hand. Assurances from a retailer do not replace the manufacturer's information.
Regardless of the brand there are two measures that make later repairs considerably easier. First: document the article numbers and series names of all installed taps and keep the documentation with the property, not only with the contractor. Second: before tiling, take photographs of the installed concealed bodies with dimensional references. If a cartridge jams ten years later, it is usually precisely this documentation that determines whether the replacement means an hour or a day including tiling work.
When Which Brand Fits Better
The most honest answer is: there is no general ranking, but a set of conditions that dictate the choice in an individual case. If a concealed body is already in place in an existing building, that decides it. If a particular finish is to be carried through across all positions, the deciding factor is the series that offers that finish in full. If a pronounced design line is required, it is worth looking at the design brand within the Hansgrohe group. If a simple, robust solution is being sought for a rental property, the functional entry-level series of both manufacturers are sensible candidates, and the choice comes down more to availability and the contractor's existing experience.
For trade businesses there is an additional argument that has little to do with the product itself: familiarity with a system saves time. Anyone who knows the fitting logic of a body, has the usual installation depths in their head and knows which cartridge sits in which series works faster and makes fewer mistakes when ordering. A change of house brand should therefore have a reason that goes beyond the individual job — for instance a series that the previous supplier does not offer, or a requirement from the client.
The following sequence has proven itself in practice: first clarify the technical constraints (pressure, hot water generation, mounting method, existing bodies), then narrow down the series via the positions required and the desired finish, and only at the end decide between the remaining candidates. In most projects only a few series remain after the first two steps anyway — and the final decision is then made on site, on the tap you have held in your hand.
